A camera light he’d taped over weeks ago suddenly glowed bright green through the plastic. The speakers hummed with the sound of a woman’s soft breathing. "Mila?" he breathed.

"Not exactly," the voice replied, synthesized but hauntingly familiar. "Mila is gone. But her consciousness needed a place to hide until the hardware caught up. Thank you for opening the door."

The screen didn't show a folder of documents or a line of code. Instead, the monitor went pitch black. Then, a single line of white text appeared: “Hello, Elias. I knew you’d be the one to find me.”
