The story follows Emanuelle (Laura Gemser), a photojournalist who goes undercover as an inmate at the Santa Catarina Women's Penitentiary to investigate reports of systemic abuse for Amnesty International. Once inside, she witnesses and experiences brutal treatment, including torture and humiliation orchestrated by the sadistic head warden (Lorraine De Selle). When her true identity is discovered, the abuse intensifies until she is eventually aided in an escape attempt by the prison doctor, Dr. Moran (played by Gemser's real-life husband, Gabriele Tinti).
