Leo fell to his knees in the mud. He reached out and touched a small, green sprout pushing through the orange sand near his heater—a Lirma seed he had found in a crashed satellite. It was fragile, tiny, and perfect.
The air in his lungs felt thin and metallic. He tried to move his hand, and instead of a mouse click, he felt the heavy resistance of a pressurized glove. He spent the first "day"—marked only by the shifting of the toxic orange haze—scavenging. He built a rudimentary backpack and a micro-refinery. Every breath cost him oxygen from his dwindling tanks. The loading screen dissolved into a blinding white light. When his vision cleared, Leo wasn’t looking at his monitor anymore. He was staring through a cracked visor. The air in his lungs felt thin and metallic
"System initialized," a calm, synthetic voice echoed in his helmet. "Welcome, Convict 4022. Your mission: Terraform this planet or face permanent exile."
Leo’s heart hammered against his ribs. This wasn't a "free download" anymore. This was his life.
As the sun set, casting long, golden shadows over the rising lakes, Leo realized he didn't want to go back to the concrete world he had left behind. He looked at his HUD. The "Free Download" had cost him his old life, but it had given him a world.
