Invasions(2003): The Barbarian

The 2003 film The Barbarian Invasions (French title: Les Invasions barbares ), directed by Denys Arcand, is a significant work in Canadian cinema that explores themes of mortality, the healthcare system, and shifting political ideologies.

The story follows Rémy, a terminally ill history professor in Montreal who is dying of cancer. His estranged son, Sébastien, a wealthy financier living in London, returns home to assist his father. Despite their ideological differences—Rémy is a lifelong socialist and "voluptuary," while Sébastien represents modern global capitalism—Sébastien uses his resources to ensure his father’s final days are comfortable, bypassing hospital waiting lists and arranging for a private room and unconventional pain management.
