Dr. Shaun Murphy becomes hyper-focused on the idea that he and Lea will grow apart after their baby is born. He meticulously compiles a list of 37 differences (which grows to 39) between them—ranging from school choices to general parenting styles—fearing these will erode their relationship.
Dr. Audrey Lim struggles to save a set of damaged lungs for her long-time patient, Becky, who has cystic fibrosis. Despite the lungs initially appearing non-viable due to infection, Lim and Jordan Allen manage to make them usable just as Becky is on the verge of death.
A young boy named Ricky is admitted with a brain infection caused by a tick bite. His parents' constant arguing over his care mirrors Shaun’s internal fears. Shaun eventually performs a risky but successful brain surgery to save the boy's life without damaging his speech or memory.
