She was already reaching for her bag. He could see she was thinking about someone else, or maybe just thinking about getting away from him. "Don't say I'm better than him," he warned, his eyes narrowing as he remembered the rumors. "Don't act like you never met me when you get back to whatever life you're living." She didn't answer, just checked her reflection
"You're the best at this," he muttered, his voice raspy. He meant the way she could walk in and make him forget the stress of the streets, but he also meant the way she could walk out just as easily. Inside, the air smelled like expensive perfume and
"When you leave," he said, standing up to watch her go, "leave it all here. Don't try to take what’s mine." He wasn't talking about clothes or jewelry; he was talking about the piece of him she’d managed to keep.
She stepped out into the night, and as the door clicked shut, the silence felt heavier than the music ever did. He sat back down, watching the time go by on his phone, knowing that as soon as she turned the corner, she’d probably be texting someone else, just like always.
