Elena didn't look at the box first. She looked at Maya. She saw the tremor in the girl’s hands and the way she flinched at the sound of a car backfiring outside. Elena knew that look; it was the look of someone who felt the future was a predator waiting in the tall grass.

Elena watched her go, then picked up her tea. The wind rattled the windowpane, but Elena didn't flinch. She simply took a sip, adjusted her "clothing" of strength, and smiled at the darkening sky. [S1E2] Proverbs 31:25

As Maya left the shop, she didn't run. She walked. Her shoulders weren't quite as high. She looked at the horizon—not with a smile yet, but with a steady gaze. Elena didn't look at the box first

"How do you laugh at a future that looks like nothing?" Maya asked. Elena knew that look; it was the look

"I don't have time for tea," Maya snapped, though her eyes filled with tears. "I have no money, no place to stay after Friday, and... and I’m alone."

Elena pushed the box of baby clothes back toward Maya. "Keep these. You’ll need them for the little one." She reached under the counter and pulled out a stack of business cards for a local women’s shelter she helped run. "And take this. I’ve got a room with a window that catches the morning sun."
