The pilot episode introduces Al Simmons, a CIA hitman who is murdered in the line of duty. Desperate to see his wife, Wanda, again, he makes a pact with the devil, Malebolgia, to return to Earth. However, the devil sends him five years into the future and transforms him into a "Hellspawn"—a dark, superhuman warrior.
