After clearing four floors, Mario reaches the top of the tower and finds Pauline. However, just as he is about to save her, Donkey Kong cuts the lights, snatches her again, and jumps out of a window. This triggers where Mario must traverse additional, more difficult floors.
Upon finally defeating Donkey Kong at the end of these extra levels, the truth is revealed: Donkey Kong wasn't actually acting out of malice.
