While celebrating on the Fourth of July, the group—Julie, Ray, Helen, and Barry—accidentally hit a pedestrian on a winding coastal road. In a panic, they dump the body into the ocean and swear to take the secret to their graves.

One year later, Julie receives an anonymous note stating, "I know what you did last summer" . The friends, now estranged and haunted by guilt, are reunited as a mysterious killer in a slicker wielding a fishing hook begins stalking and murdering them one by one. The story centers on four high school graduates in the seaside town of Southport, North Carolina. While celebrating on the Fourth of July, the
