Fox’s Book of Martyrs , originally titled Actes and Monuments , is a seminal work of Protestant history and martyrology written by John Foxe and first published in 1563. For centuries, it was one of the most widely read books in England, often second only to the Bible in importance in Puritan households.

Written during a period of intense religious conflict, the book was published early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I , just five years after the death of the Catholic Queen Mary I. Foxe's primary goal was to justify the English Reformation and establish the Church of England as the "true" continuation of Christianity by documenting the persecution of Protestants under Catholic authority.
