Set in the Irish Midlands in 1862, shortly after the Great Famine, the story follows Elizabeth "Lib" Wright , an English nurse hired to observe an 11-year-old girl, Anna O'Donnell. Anna claims she has not eaten for four months since her First Holy Communion, surviving supposedly on "manna from heaven" .
