The monument was commissioned in (or 1632) by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan , to immortalize his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal . She died during childbirth in 1631, and the emperor’s grief led to the creation of this "Crown of the Palace" (the literal translation of Taj Mahal ) as her final resting place.
