The island of Palanai features flooded jungles and swamps. A new motorboat vehicle is introduced for faster travel across these water-logged areas.

The zombie variety is expanded with new types like the Wrestler (large, heavy hitter), Screamer (stuns with a sonic blast), Grenadier (throws flesh at you), and Drowner (hides in water).

Players can import their character and skill trees from the original Dead Island . If starting fresh, you begin at level 15. The skill point cap is also increased to 70. Combat and Arsenal Improvements

Firearms have been buffed to deal significantly more damage than in the first title. New weapon types include sniper rifles, harpoon guns, nail guns, and rocket launchers.

On the PS3, the game is noted for its lush tropical visuals, though it can suffer from occasional framerate dips during heavy action. Various editions were released for the console, including the Rigor Mortis Collector's Edition which included physical items like a hula girl bobble figurine and a zombie arm bottle opener.
