Come and See was released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The screenplay, co-written by Klimov and Ales Adamovich, was inspired by Adamovich’s own experiences as a teenage partisan and his 1971 novel Khatyn . The production itself was a feat of perseverance; Klimov spent eight years battling Soviet censorship before finally receiving approval to film his uncompromising vision.
