The series was originally pitched with a much darker premise: the Belchers were envisioned as a family of who sourced meat for their burgers from the crematorium next door. While Fox executives requested this be removed for a lighter tone, the idea was repurposed for the pilot episode, "Human Flesh," where Louise spreads a rumor about the restaurant's meat to her classmates.
